Parents honour babies’ memories

SHARE

Following a heartbreaking loss, couple Hayley Castle and Nathan Rae are speaking out about the tragic fate of their twins and have found some comfort in honouring their babies’ memories.

On 5 November 2018, at 22 weeks pregnant, Hayley gave birth to her beautiful identical twin girls, Remy and Lilah Rae.

That morning, Hayley was experiencing pains she thought were Braxton Hicks Contractions.

After getting up to get ready for work Hayley’s waters broke, and she bled the entire way to hospital.

Once there, Hayley went into denial about the situation.

Both her daughters had heartbeats, but she was told she would need to deliver and give birth to her girls.

Delivered naturally, Remy was born first, and Lilah followed four minutes later.

Hayley remembers “seeing their chest rising and falling” as Remy and Lilah spent a short time breathing.

Devastatingly, the babies could not be taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the couple had to watch their little ones pass away.

After their loss, the couple spent the night with the girls, surrounded by family, and held onto the memories they had had with them, knowing the future they planned could no longer happen.

“Leaving the hospital empty-handed was heartbreaking for us,” Hayley said.

“We planned our future to have two beautiful little girls in it and I just had to meet them and say goodbye to them all in the same 10 minutes.”

Hayley and Nathan are sharing their story to let others know about the benefits of the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Evening.

“Everyone can come and share empathy and honour our babies that aren’t in our arms anymore,” Hayley said.

She added pregnancy and infant loss could be a taboo topic, but the ceremony gave those who faced a devastating loss a place to come together and “a platform to share memories”.

The service will take place on Tuesday 15 October at 6.15pm at the Garden of the Innocents in the grounds of Sandgate Cemetery.
