WHAT: Rip Curl Newcastle Cup presented by Corona

It’s the business end of the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup presented by Corona, the second stop on the World Surf League (WSL) 2021 Championship Tour (CT). Can we boast a hometown champion with Ryan Callinan and Morgan Cibilic leading the local charge? Already World No. 1 John John Florence has departed the scene during a mid-week thriller. The women’s section, featuring Aussie star Stephanie Gilmore and Hawaiian Carissa Moore, is also expected to be a hotly-contested affair over the weekend.
WHAT: Lifeline Hunter Book Fair
WHERE: Newcastle Showground Exhibition Centre
WHEN: Saturday and Sunday, 10 and 11 April
TIME: 9am-5pm (Saturday), 9am-4pm (Sunday)
More than 20,000 pre-loved tomes will adorn the Newcastle Showground Exhibition Centre when the Lifeline Hunter Book Fair opens its doors for a huge two-day event. Various paperbacks and hardcovers, featuring 60 categories, and much more, including a separate space specifically for the children, will be available. Use the Brown Road entrance at Broadmeadow, between 9am and 5pm on Saturday and from 9am until 4pm on Sunday. WHAT: National AON UNI7s Series
WHERE: Newcastle No.2 Sportsground
WHEN: Saturday and Sunday, 10 and 11 April
TIME: From 8.30am
The University of Newcastle’s women’s rugby 7s (NUW7s) will host the national AON UNI7s Series at the No.2 Sportsground this weekend. The two-day fixture, played across two regional and two national tournaments, consists of nine universities from throughout Australia. Kicking off at 8.30am on Saturday 10 April, it includes HJRU girls’ exhibition matches, too. The local NUW7s squad – featuring Aussie representatives Faith Nathan and Madison Higgins – faces the University of Adelaide, University of Canberra and Sydney University in its pool. With legendary hits such as Run To Paradise and Boys Will Be Boys, the Choirboys will rock it out at The Cambridge in Newcastle this weekend. After four decades in the business, the guys – Mark Gable, Lindsay Tebbutt, Ian Hulme and Brett Williams – still love to play, turn up and give it everything. Give them a stage, a PA, some light, and now an online platform and it becomes a moment in time captured… to be savoured for ever more. WHAT: City of Newcastle NewRun – Festival of Running
WHERE: Newcastle Harbour precinct
WHEN: Sunday 11 April
TIME: From 6am
Newcastle will stage the 14th annual City of Newcastle NewRun – Festival of Running this weekend. It will include a new City of Newcastle Marathon (42.2km), Marathon Tyres Half Marathon (21.1km), Newcastle Herald Hill to Harbour 10km, H Events 5km and Hunter Orthodontics 2k4Kids races. The past 14 years have seen the course move from a single 10km event to a full-blown running festival, with races for all standard of recreational and elite runners.
