Water safety will be at the forefront of emergency service messaging following an horrific few days throughout the Hunter.

It comes after one man died, and another’s in critical condition, after being rescued from the surf at Shoal Bay on Monday afternoon.

It’s understood the two swimmers found trouble at Zenith Beach about 2.45pm on 14 April.

They were removed from the water by friends where members of the public and officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District performed CPR until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Tragically, one of them died at the scene.

A second man was listed as being in a critical condition.

The men are both Nepalese nationals, aged in their 20s.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Meanwhile, police have also launched an investigation after a person’s body was pulled from the Hunter River at Morpeth at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to Queens Wharf Road just after 3pm on Sunday 13 April.

It followed reports a body had been sighted floating in the river.

Personnel eventually removed it from the water about 4.15pm.

Officers are currently involved in the search for a swimmer, who went missing at a beach in Newcastle, too.

After the multi-agency operation paused late on Sunday, emergency services personnel resumed their quest along the coastline on Monday morning.

They were informed a woman entered Newcastle Beach, Shortland Esplanade, about 4.25am on 13 April and did not return.

She was last seen wearing a pink top, black pants and no shoes.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District, with assistance from Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS), immediately started a search.

Police are urging anyone with information about the whereabouts of the woman to contact Newcastle Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
