On the move: Newcastle immigration up 30%

Newcastle is set to join other regional areas in welcoming record migration numbers in 2022.

In the three months from August to November, there has been an increase of 30% in the number of people looking to call the former steel city home.

The numbers show record migration, according to new data from nationwide moving services Muval

With ABS migration data now six months old and further updates cancelled until mid 2022, the removalist website provides a proven and reliable source of relocation trends, it says.

After a mass exodus during prolonged lockdowns, Sydney and Melbourne’s net migration is bouncing back slowly and taking share from Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane as seen through moving house searches on Muval’s booking platform.

In Sydney, net migration is sitting at -47% (year ending 30 November 2021) – an improvement from August where that number was -58% with Sydneysiders looking to move to smaller cities like Brisbane and Perth in the midst of the lockdown.

The new data shows Brisbane remains the most popular capital city with a positive net migration of 78% in the year ending 30 November 2021.

Muval has already seen a 160% increase in people searching for removalists since July, with a further 40% growth predicted over December and January 2022.

Muval CEO James Morrell says a second migration boom is almost a certainty.

“We have seen record growth as a business this year and there’s no signs of this slowing down,” he said.

“As border restrictions ease and hotel quarantine removed for people moving interstate, we’ll see huge amounts of pent up demand released.

“We’re preparing for a second boom in moves early next year by looking for more removalists, hiring additional customer service specialists and innovating our offering to make moving even easier.”

Newcastle joins Wollongong and other larger satellite cities numbers staying high in terms of interest.

Mr Morrell says what is driving the demand this time of year, is the rush to get in school catchment areas before January and the ongoing trend of working from home allowing people to prioritise lifestyle over proximity to an office and house prices.
