A man’s licence has been suspended after an off-duty officer spotted a vehicle, allegedly used in a hit and run which killed a dog, at a mechanic in Anna Bay.
It’s just another chapter in the fail-to-stop crash that’s enraged a community this week.
A 71-year-old male was walking his canine, Lulu, on Stockton Street, Nelson Bay, near the roundabout at Church Street, just before 9am on Tuesday 13 January.
He paused briefly at the pedestrian traffic island in the middle of the thoroughfare, before continuing to cross the road.
A vehicle – described as a blue Ford Territory – entered the roundabout.
It clipped the man, impacting his left elbow and leg, and struck Lulu, too, killing the eight-year-old dog instantly.
Port Stephens-Hunter Police District immediately began inquiries into the incident.
Then, on Wednesday night (14 January), an off-duty officer observed a Ford Territory at a mechanic’s workshop on his way to work.
The vehicle was subsequently seized after police identified damage consistent with the accident.
About 12.15pm on Thursday 15 January, officers attended a home in Anna Bay where they spoke with a 65-year-old.
Apart from suspending his licence, traffic enforcement action will be taken, too.
