NSW SES Hunter Unit seeks new members

SHARE

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is currently recruiting new members to join the Hunter Capability Unit.

The role involves volunteering in the Emergency Operations Centre in times of floods and storms.

Commander Hunter Unit Vic Weller said the recruitment drive kicked off in National Volunteer Week – and was specifically targeted to those who were keen to be trained in incident management positions.

“NSW SES operates under the AIIMS structure – Australasian Inter-Service Incident Management System,” he explained.

“This nationally-recognised system ensures all emergency response agencies, including NSW SES and NSW Rural Fire Service, are functioning under the same configuration.”

“It includes planning, public information, operations and logistics.

“Training is provided to ensure new members acquire the skills for these roles.

“The Unit undergoes drills every second Tuesday night at Metford.

“Computer skills and a desire to help your community are the only pre-requisites.”

Mr Weller said the roles in the Hunter Unit were different to those typically recognised by the community.

Local unit volunteers, easily recognised in orange overalls, are trained in “hands on” response including flood boat operations, chainsaw and roof repair.

Those working in the Emergency Operations Centre are involved “behind the scenes” and just as vitally important for the NSW SES to respond effectively to natural disasters.

Amanda Hyde is a member of the Hunter Unit and said the experience of assisting the community in times of need was very rewarding.

“I enjoy being an integral part of the Public Information Unit,” she explained.

“This involves the dissemination of products including flood watches, severe weather warnings and evacuation notices during operational response.

“I encourage anyone who is interested find out more about what’s involved.”
