Two of the Newcastle Knights’ most popular players, Brodie Jones and Dylan Lucas, have recommitted their playing futures with the club.
Jones, a Cessnock Goannas junior, inked a one season extension with his local NRL outfit while Lucas, a recent Prime Minister’s XIII representative, will remain until the end of 2027.
The coalfields young gun joined Newcastle’s Harold Matthews squad in 2014 and has made his way through every Knights’ junior age team, including the Australian Schoolboys.
After becoming a full-time contracted NRL player in 2020, Jones debuted in round three against the Penrith Panthers.
Twelve months later, he was named Rookie of the Year.
Newcastle director of football Peter Parr said Jones re-signing was a reward for consistency.
“Brodie has a tremendous work ethic and, in recent times, shown a genuine ability to come up with big plays at crucial moments,” he explained.
“We look forward to him improving even further and the club is grateful he has chosen to continue his career with the Knights.”
Lucas, 24, is another who’s progressed through the pathways system to establish himself in the NRL, after linking up with the club in 2019.
The versatile centre/back-rower made his debut against the Dolphins in round three, 2023, at McDonald Jones Stadium.
But, 2024’s been a breakout season for him, proving his adaptability in several positions while utilising his pace and athleticism to break the line in attack and defend against the best attackers in the NRL.
A proud Wiradjuri man, Lucas has also established himself as a leader in the club’s community and indigenous programs, including the 2024 Knights Ken Stephens Medallist and Community Player of the Year.
“Over the past couple of seasons, Dylan has become an important member of our team,” Parr said.
“Our expectation is he will continue to improve and play a pivotal role for the Knights moving forward.”
