Novocastrian Warren Handley chalks up 50 years’ service with Legacy

Legacy is an Australian charity committed to supporting the families of deceased and seriously-injured veterans.

But, for one Newcastle resident, it means that and so much more.

For the past five decades, Warren Handley has selflessly dedicated his time to the organisation.

And, recently, Newcastle Legacy recognised the incredible milestone by celebrating his 50th anniversary as a volunteer at a special function at its Broadmeadow base.

Having seen first-hand the impact of the service, Mr Handley joined his local club in 1975 after serving in the Vietnam War.

“We lost one of the men I trained with,” he recalled.

“He was killed when his vehicle hit a landmine.

“I realised then the importance of Legacy’s mission to ‘look after the missus and the kids’.”

Newcastle Legacy supports in excess of 800 widows and children, with most services delivered by its 79 volunteers, like Mr Handley, known as Legatees.

Many of them are veterans who understand the sacrifices of military service.

They work alongside staff to provide personalised assistance, from helping with Department of Veterans’ Affairs paperwork and claims to aiding with superannuation and children’s education costs.

Mr Handley has cared for countless Legacy families, including widow Kay.

“He started off as a Legatee but now he’s become a real friend,” she said.

“Warren helped my daughter with a lot of schooling when she was young and he also arranged for her to attend Legacy camps with other veterans’ kids.

“And, she has kept those friendships.

“He’s just been really, really good support.

“Even when he hasn’t been well himself, he’s always there.”
