Novocastrian Luke Aiello is urging people to invest in their lifelong education.
With National Adult Learning Week (1-8 September) upon us, the 28-year-old encourages Hunter residents to explore the range of in-demand engineering careers offered at TAFE NSW.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 68% of Australians engaged in training and study in 2021, including the Newcastle student, made the switch to learn a trade and investigate a career in engineering.
Demand across a range of job roles is expected to grow, with another 39,000 workers predicted in the mining and manufacturing industries by 2026.
Mr Aiello completed an apprenticeship and worked for Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) before deciding to follow his passion and continue his learning journey in engineering by completing his Advanced Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical).
“I knew I wanted to do something more creative and challenging,” he said.
“TAFE helped me learn not only the hands-on practical skills you need to start your career but also build your confidence on the job.
“Every day is different.
“It’s a balance of technical and project management; I’m constantly learning.
“I enjoyed my job at RMS but realised I was interested in something more technical and innovative.
“Now, I’ve made the switch, and I know it’s exactly where I’m meant to be.”
TAFE Newcastle head teacher for engineering and manufacturing Karen Humphreys said the training provided by TAFE NSW gave students the practical skills and knowledge for various engineering careers from mechanical technicians, CNC operators, and draftspeople to production and asset reliability managers.
“The nationally-recognised Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting provides pupils with the problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude they need to join in-demand industries like power generation, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and oil and gas drilling for careers as an engineering draftsperson,” she explained.
“Students can continue their learning journey to advanced-level technician and management roles by completing an Advanced Diploma/ Diploma in Engineering (Technical).”
TAFE NSW offers engineering qualifications at various locations across the state.
