Newcastle has split the results from its double header weekend in Victoria.
The Northstars travelled to Melbourne to take on the Ice and Mustangs minus captain Bert Malloy (unable to travel), as well as Liam Manwarring and Tomas Landa (both injured).
Despite hitting back twice, Newcastle eventually suffered a 4-3 loss to the Ice on Saturday.
A Richie Tesarik goal tied up the first period and Jayden Ryan then put Newcastle in front.
The Ice responded through MacKenzie Carauana to make it 2-all, before Sammy Banga again gave the visitors the lead.
However, two more goals from the Ice sealed its first win of the regular season over Newcastle, which had won the previous three matches by a combined score of 16-5.
The Northstars were another man down against the Mustangs on Sunday as Paddy Ward was ruled out through injury.
Goals from Shane Southwood, import Trey Phillips and Hamish Powell built a 3-0 lead after two periods, before the home side finally got on the scoreboard via Michael McMahon.
Any chance of a dramatic comeback was snuffed out when another Northstars import, Francis Drolet, guided the puck into an empty net.
Newcastle will face Sydney Bears at Macquarie Ice Rink tomorrow (Friday 12 July) from 7.30pm, then take on Canberra Brave in a mouth-watering, top-of-the-table double header on Saturday 20 July (Canberra) and Sunday 21 July (Hunter Ice Skating Stadium).
Meanwhile, the 2019 Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) Finals will be played in the Hunter on Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 August.
The weekend is set to include other activities for fans, such as a league after-party, pre-game entertainment and fun for kids.
