UPDATE: Nobbys Beach closed after shark sighting

SHARE

Newcastle’s Nobbys Beach is currently closed after the sighting of three sharks.

Two of the sharks were identified before 11am this morning (Monday 11 January) using drones from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) pilot program with Surf Lifesaving Australia, with a third shark being spotted a short time later.

After being alerted to the sighting, lifeguards took to the water for confirmation and then closed the beach.

The species of shark is yet to be identified and the beach will remain closed for the rest of the day until they are no longer in the area.

The beach will be assessed in the morning and reopened if safe.

Nobbys Beach is one of 34 locations participating in the UAV program under the NSW Government’s Shark Management Strategy.

The drones provide the community with a technology that provides greater coverage and surveillance of potential risks along the coastline.

All drones are equipped with speakers to alert beachgoers about the risks.

More to come.
