No ALW glory for Jets in Perth

The Newcastle Jets’ strong start to the A-League Women’s (ALW) season appears a distant memory after the side slumped to its third consecutive loss on Saturday night.

Ahead of a busy block of matches, Stephen Hoyle’s outfit turned in an out-of-sorts performance to drop its fixture against Perth Glory, 1-0, at the Sam Kerr Football Centre.

The defeat also pushed the Hunter-based club back into eighth spot on the ladder.

Newcastle skipper Cassidy Davis couldn’t hide her displeasure at the result.

“I think there were definitely moments where we could have finished off some goals and, obviously, some silly errors cost us a goal,” she said.

“It’s a tough one to take, especially coming all the way here (Western Australia).

“You want to leave with three points.

“But, I just thought we missed that little bit of edge [today].

“So, it’s really disappointing.

“We’ve got to stay positive and regroup… see where we went wrong and go again.”

In the next few weeks, the Jets tackle the Central Coast Mariners (10 January), Sydney FC (13 January), Melbourne City (16 January) and Adelaide United (21 January) before a bye.

“Sometimes, it’s good to play games and not have to train, to be honest,” Davis said.

“The whole squad will be important moving forward.

“This month of football is going to really tell our season.

“If you lose a match, you really drop on the table.

“It’s super tight.

“So, we need to make sure that we’re on every game and we’re recovering well.

“Obviously, the last time we played the Mariners, it wasn’t pretty.

“That’s where our focus must be… an F3 derby at No. 2 Sportsground.

“Then, we’ll concentrate on each match as it comes.”

The hosts broke the deadlock in the eighth minute when Isobel Dalton managed to squeeze the ball past Anna Leat for a 1-0 lead.

Despite that, Newcastle tried valiantly to equalise, however to no avail.

Jets’ duo Sophie Hoban and Lauren Allan both found rival keeper Teresa Morrissey’s safe hands in the opening 25.

But, sadly, the chances dried up soon after, as the showdown descended into a scrappy affair, marred by the Glory’s spoiling tactics.

Morrisey denied Hoban again in the 36th minute as the combatants went to the break.

In the second period, opportunities to Haley Johnson and Josie Allan also went begging in a showdown that failed to reach any great heights.
