NJC, Real NRL in a league of their own

SHARE

Who is the fastest man in Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League (Real NRL)?

The answer to that question might be revealed sooner rather than later after the Newcastle Jockey Club (NJC) unveiled its new partnership with the Real NRL this week.

The affiliation also includes naming rights to the football code’s own race day at the Broadmeadow track on Saturday 24 September.

“Both parties are currently exploring the concept [of a race],” NJC CEO Duane Dowell said.

“We used to stage something similar at Muswellbrook, with players representing league, union, soccer and AFL.

“A sprint on the course proper between the flyers from the Real NRL, to determine the fastest guy within the league on their race day, would be fantastic.”

Dowell, a devoted Parramatta Eels supporter, admitted he was thrilled to join forces with Newcastle Rugby League.

“Each of us have a rich history within the Hunter,” he said.

“And, both organisations have been a big part of the fabric of sport in Newcastle for a long time.

“It’s a great example of how working together can provide mutual benefits for both parties.”

On its Saturday race day (24 September), the Real NRL will also host its annual awards presentation in the Trackside Marquee to celebrate the achievements of its participating clubs in 2022 – Maitland Pickers, Lakes United Seagulls, South Newcastle Lions, Macquarie Scorpions, Kurri Kurri Bulldogs, Cessnock Goannas, Western Suburbs Rosellas, Central Newcastle Butcher Boys, Wyong Roos, The Entrance Tigers and the Northern Hawks.

One such award includes the Newcastle Racecourse Try of the Year.

To further Newcastle Rugby League’s mission “to grow the game”, the two businesses have teamed up to implement the Newcastle Racecourse Try of the Week, too.

Fans vote for the best four-pointer, on a weekly basis, for the chance to win a table of six on the Ascot Lawn and a hospitality voucher to the value of $200.

“Engaging with our audience and supporters each week through our social media channels is a key part of our marketing strategy,” Newcastle Rugby League chairman John Crooks said.

“Partnering with the Newcastle Jockey Club allows us to reward fans for interacting with our posts.

“We’re looking forward to an enduring relationship with the NJC.”

Tickets for the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League Race Day will go on sale to the public on Friday 8 July, from 10am.
