Nine new cases take Hunter cluster to 104

SHARE

Nine new cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the Hunter New England Health District overnight.

Of the latest detections, three are in Newcastle and Port Stephens alike, two are in Maitland and the final case is in Lake Macquarie.

Eight are linked to previous infections with one still under investigation.

Two were infectious in the community and another two are linked to the aged care cluster.

But, according to NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Mick Willing (Regional NSW Field Operations), a party, which took place at Jesmond, was of some concern for authorities.

“Although we’re still investigating [the breaches], 18 fines have been issued,” he added.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said it was positive to see some stabilisation in the Hunter, however, she urged the community, particularly those in Maitland to remain vigilant for updates.

It comes as 415 infections were recorded in NSW, with at least 35 in the community during their infectious period.

Dr Chant urged the community to stay home and get vaccinated as soon as they can.

“These case numbers are too high, we need to see these case numbers go down and we all have a part to play,” she said on Sunday.

“I can’t stress enough the seriousness of the current situation and my grave concerns that these case numbers will continue to escalate.

“Everyone needs to have a great sense of responsibility to follow the rules.”

Devastatingly, there were another four deaths.

A female in her 50s who was not vaccinated died at Campbelltown Hospital. Another woman in her 80s who was vaccinated but had underlying chronic health conditions died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

A man in his 80s who wasn’t vaccinated died at Liverpool Hospital and a woman in her 70s who was only recently given her first dose of the vaccine died at Royal North Shore Hospital.

It is vital that anyone who has any symptoms or is a close or casual contact, isolates and is tested immediately.
