Peter Sleap is quietly confident his beloved former club can upset the Maitland Pickers’ dominance in Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League (NEWRL).
But, first, the South Newcastle legend wants to see the Lions roar over the dual Denton Engineering Cup premiers in the annual Sleapy’s Day fixture at Townson Oval on Saturday 10 August.
The two combatants, and eventual 2023 grand finalists, produced a bruisy encounter last year and the Sleapy’s Foundation co-founder expects more of the same in round 16.
“We’re after revenge,” he said.
“Maitland got us 24-10, however I know Souths will be keen to strike back.
“No matter what, I’m predicting a cracking game featuring two great sides.
“And, it looks like the Pickers and Lions will go into Sleapy’s Day one-two [on the ladder] again.
“However, credit where it’s due, Maitland understands the enormity of the match.
“They’ve played deciders, NSW President’s Cups… and beaten the best.
“Some sides come here and don’t understand what Sleapy’s Day means.
“But, the Pickers are a professional organisation.
“They bought into it, made specially-designed jumpers and even brought down buses from Maitland; they put their heart and soul into it.
“That’s what we want.
“Someone’s who prepared to give it their all.”
While 3,000 supporters packed into the Merewether ground to watch the action, and partake in the many fundraising activities, the footy result distressed Sleap.
“I hate losing,” he told the Newcastle Weekly with a grin.
“However, I think we’ll be a little bit more prepared next month.
“The boys realise Maitland will come with their A-game.
“And, even though Sleapy’s Day gets emotional for many people – especially at Souths, we’ve got to take that out of it.
“I’m sure Bobcat (Andrew Ryan) will have the Lions raring to go.
“Plus, I think we’re a more mobile team right across the paddock this season.
“So, we need to be patient.
“Another incentive, the guys will compete for the inaugural Sleapy’s Foundation trophy.”
Sleap was a member of the 1988 Souths side, which defeated the Lakes United Seagulls 29-18.
Twelve months later, he and team-mates knocked over the Western Suburbs Rosellas 20-12.
So, the flying winger knows what it takes to win a title or two.
“I really believe 2024 can be the year of the Lions,” he said.
“Honestly, Sammy Clune, the halfback, has added another dimension to their game with Ryan Glanville.
“They can play both sides of the ruck or one can take control or they can work together.
“That could help us go one better this year.”
Sleapy’s Day kicks off from 10am on 10 August, with an after-event at Souths Merewether at 5.30pm.
