Newcastle’s tallest building reaches the top

Newcastle’s skyline has reached a new height, with The Store in the West End now officially topping out.

The 29-storey eastern tower at 854 Hunter Street has reached its highest point, making the development Newcastle’s tallest building and a new landmark for the city.

The $250 million-plus project is expected to be completed in early 2027, with construction now moving into its final stages.

Once finished, The Store will feature 352 apartments across two towers, along with 3500sqm of retail and office space at ground level and within the podium.

Residents will also have access to a range of recreational facilities, including a 25-metre swimming pool, full-sized tennis court, playground, outdoor dining and landscaped areas.

The development is being built on the site of the former Newcastle and Suburban Co-operative Society building, which dates back to 1898 and has a long connection to the city.

Lord Mayor Cr Gavin Morris said the site had played an important role in Newcastle’s history.

“The Store has always belonged to Newcastle,” he said.

“It began in 1898 with coal miners pooling what little they had, and at its peak 98,000 Novocastrians were members.”

Morris said the new towers represented another chapter for the West End, which has undergone significant development in recent years.

“To watch the site rise again as the tallest residential towers in the city is the west end coming back to life,” he said.

DOMA Development Director Chris Farrington said the project was designed to create new homes and a commercial space for the city.

“The Store is a significant investment in Newcastle and is part of a broader story of transformation underway across the city,” he said.

The Store forms part of a wider redevelopment of Newcastle’s West End, which has included investment in housing, transport and commercial projects.

The broader site redevelopment also includes the nearby transport interchange and commercial building, forming part of a long-term plan to reshape the precinct.

A limited number of two, three and four-bedroom apartments remain available at The Store.
