The city of Newcastle is gearing up to host the fifth instalment of the School Sport Australia (SSA) Games in 2026.
And, it’s expected to provide a massive boon for the region, with more than $4.5 million projected to boost the local economy.
From 25 to 30 October, the event will attract in excess of 1,200 student athletes from across the country, all competing in several national championships.
Sports set to be played throughout the LGA include basketball, cricket, soccer, golf, hockey, softball and touch football.
City of Newcastle (CN) councillor Peta Winney-Baartz said the extravaganza would deliver a major windfall, particularly for the tourism and accommodation industries.
“We’re going to have all of these visitors, they need somewhere to stay, places to eat, and they’ll explore the wonderful attractions we have here in the city,” she explained.
“All of these factors together will bring a significant shot in the arm to our economy.”
Cr Winney-Baartz said Newcastle’s growing reputation as a sporting destination made it the ideal host city.
“We have an abundance of facilities, along with the infrastructure to support an event of this size including hotels, restaurants and a thriving tourism economy,” she told the Newcastle Weekly.
“Over the past few years, we’ve had a concentrated effort to improve our sports infrastructure.
“And, this event is the fruition of that work.”
SSA executive officer Phil Reeves said the organisation was thrilled to bring the Games to Newcastle, highlighting the city’s capacity to stage a world-class showpiece.
“Seven national championships will be played across Newcastle, highlighting the incredible talent of student athletes from all states and territories,” he added.
“But, this event wouldn’t be possible without the support of the City of Newcastle and our major partner, Struddys Apparel.”
Tighes Hill Public School student Mae Morrell, who competed in a similar event in Ballarat for football, said the SSA Games was a life-changing experience.
“It’s an opportunity to make friends from across the state and to play the game I love,” she stated.
The 2026 SSA Games are expected to entice athletes, coaches, officials and families from across Australia.
Activities planned throughout the week include the Championship Team Experience excursion day and a vibrant opening ceremony.
Newcastle joins past host cities such as the Gold Coast, Moreton Bay and Ballarat, all of which saw significant economic and community benefits from the Games.
“We’re a proud sporting city,” Cr Winney-Baartz said.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming the next generation of sporting stars to our world-class venues.”
