A Newcastle salon is encouraging people to nominate themselves or someone they know for free pampering services through a new community initiative.
The New Law has launched HELD, an ongoing program offering personalised salon treatments to people navigating challenges such as illness, grief, burnout or caring responsibilities.
Co-owner Tianna Burnham said the initiative was inspired by the stories she and business partner Ella Hepplewhite hear from clients every day.
“Life has been feeling really heavy for everybody at the moment,” Ms Burnham said.
“We just thought it would be a really good opportunity for us to give back.”
Unlike many campaigns, HELD does not require applicants to share their story publicly, provide before-and-after photos or post on social media.
“We don’t really need a story,” Ms Burnham said.
“Everybody just needs some time out sometimes.
“Even if it’s something little, if it can make one person feel a bit better, then why not?”
The salon has already received a strong response, with nominations ranging from people living with cancer and those grieving the loss of a loved one or parents struggling with everyday life.
“I’ve been blown away at how many nominations we’ve already received in a couple of days,” Ms Burnham said.
“I think the biggest one that I’ve noticed is the overwhelmed parents.”
As a multi-service salon, treatments are tailored to each recipient.
Some may receive a facial, while others may simply want their hair washed or another service that suits their circumstances.
Ms Burnham said launching the initiative was about finding another way to give back to the local community.
“We often get asked to donate gift vouchers for fundraisers, which we love doing,” she said.
“But this is a nice way for us to know it’s going to someone who genuinely needs some time out and a bit of pampering.”
She said the willingness of people to nominate themselves had also been encouraging.
“It’s opened my eyes that people are changing and saying, ‘I could really use a hand or a break right now’,” Ms Burnham said.
“We don’t have to all juggle in silence.”
The HELD initiative will run on an ongoing basis, with nominations open to anyone in the Newcastle community.
