Newcastle Rowing Club gears up for popular Linwood Throsby Gift Relay

It’s already been a massive 12 months for the Newcastle Rowing Club (NRC).

However, it is going to get even bigger when the organisation hosts the annual Linwood Throsby Gift Relay and Sprint Regatta this weekend.

The feature event, which forms part of the Central Districts Rowing Sprint Championships, will hit the water at Carrington on Sunday 27 November.

“It’ll be the 24th time we’ve staged it on Throsby Creek,” NRC president John McLeod said.

“And, it’s one of the most interesting one-day rowing regattas in the state, over a distinctive three-lane sprint course.

“Locals from Newcastle and the Hunter Valley will compete against athletes travelling from the Mid-North Coast, Central Coast and Sydney.

“So, it’s a great event for the city.

“But, the Linwood Throsby Gift Relay is unique within the Australian rowing landscape as it provides an experience rarely seen in the sport.

“With $1,000 in prizemoney – donated by Anne Sharkey & Associates – along with a historic trophy up for grabs, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Valley Grammar School and Newcastle University Boat Club will battle it out in a terrific all-local battle.”

After being named Rowing Australia’s 2001 Club of the Year, NRC celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2022.

McLeod, who’s been at the helm of NRC for more than two decades, said the weekend regatta was the icing on the cake.

“We are the only inner-city rowing club in Newcastle, so we’re very keen to bring colour and energy to the creek whenever we can,” he stated.

“Especially in 2022, after winning the 2021 Club of the Year title.

“We’re extremely grateful to receive strong support from City of Newcastle, Port of Newcastle and several other businesses.

“It’s wonderful these major organisations get behind our club.”

NRC patron, and Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes said City of Newcastle welcomed the opportunity to co-host the Central Districts Rowing Sprint Championships in Newcastle.

“We’re proud to support one of the biggest regattas [right here],” she said.

“We wish all the visiting competitors well, but particularly Newcastle Rowing Club members.

“Council is working to attract more state and national sporting events of this calibre to Newcastle.”

The final of the Linwood Throsby Gift Relay starts from noon.
