The Newcastle Roller Derby League (NRDL) will launch its 2026 season with an exciting double-header extravaganza this weekend.

And, the combatants are promising fast-paced action, community atmosphere and family-friendly entertainment for local fans.

The opener will take place at Kahibah Public School on Saturday 21 March and feature a new Short Track Roller Derby format, allowing spectators to get closer to the action and experience the speed and physicality of the sport from the trackside.

It kicks off with Newcastle’s next generation of skaters, as junior teams, the Frog Stompers and Scrimming Jets, take to the track.

They will be followed by the main event, with the Bogey Rollers set to face reigning 2025 champions the Harbour Hellcats in what is expected to be a fiercely-contested clash.

Founded more than a decade ago, the Newcastle Roller Derby League has grown into a hub for women’s and youth sports in the Hunter.

The NRDL provides opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills, build confidence and compete at a high level while fostering a supportive sporting culture.

A NRDL spokesperson said the event was designed to give the community a better look at the sport while celebrating the start of a new season.

“This event is a great way for the community to experience roller derby up close,” they said.

“Short track derby brings the action right to the fans and, kicking off the season with both junior and adult teams, makes a great start to the year.”

Beyond the on-track action, the event also includes food stalls, raffles, a canteen and a live DJ, creating a family-friendly atmosphere for attendees.

Doors open at 5pm, with the first bout starting at 5.30pm and the main event scheduled for 7pm.

Tickets are available online, with limited availability expected at the door if not sold out prior.
