A humble Lee-Anne McDougall admitted she was blown away to receive a NSW Government Community Service Award at the weekend.
The Newcastle Pride founder and president secured the prestigious plaudit for her dedication to, and advocacy for, Newcastle’s LGBTQI+ community.
She was instrumental in the establishment of the event in 2018, which was the culmination of two decades of her work serving on various committees including Rainbow Visions and Big Rainbow.
Now, under her leadership, Newcastle Pride has become highly-regarded for its activism, work to create safe spaces, and its inclusion of intersectional communities as well as allies.
“I’m absolutely honoured to receive the NSW Government Community Service Award,” Ms McDougall said.
“You don’t do things like this for the recognition.
“But, since establishing Newcastle Pride five years ago, it has been a rewarding experience.
“The growth of the event is truly amazing.
“That’s thanks to a hardworking committee and the magnificent support of the community who have all played a part in the success of Newcastle Pride.”
Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp presented the award to Ms McDougall at Newcastle Pride’s foreshore march on Saturday 18 February, celebrating the start of Sydney World Pride.
“Lee-Anne’s commitment and passion really shines through in her work with Newcastle Pride,” he said.
“She’s an exceptionally deserving recipient of this award.
“I’ve seen first-hand how dedicated she is to inclusion and equality… and the positive effect this had on our city and wider region.
“It’s thanks to Lee-Anne and Newcastle Pride that our city is much more vibrant, diverse and overall wonderful place to be.”
Additionally, Newcastle Pride was named as the city’s Community Group of the Year in 2020.
