City of Newcastle’s five inland swimming pools are being prepared for the warmer months, with a range of upgrades underway before the summer season begins.
Lambton Park War Memorial Swimming Centre will be the first to welcome swimmers back, reopening on 24 August.
The city’s other inland pools at Wallsend, Mayfield, Stockton and Beresfield will reopen on 26 September.
The annual winter closure allows crews to carry out essential maintenance aimed at improving safety and extending the life of the ageing facilities.
City of Newcastle Acting Executive Manager Community and Recreation Donna McGovern said the work was an important part of preparing the pools for another busy season.
“We know how much our community values our inland pools as hubs of recreation, connection and education,” Ms McGovern said.
“This is why we make the most of the winter closure each year to undertake a comprehensive program of essential work across all five pools.
“Our teams carry out safety upgrades, freshen up painted surfaces including non-slip areas, service plant and equipment, undertake plumbing repairs and complete pool tile and promenade maintenance.
“This ensures we can continue to provide safe, clean and enjoyable aquatic facilities, and enhance the longevity of these ageing community assets.”
Each pool is also receiving site-specific improvements.
At Lambton, crews are carrying out a major service of the splash park and installing new fencing around the waterslide.
Wallsend is undergoing some of the most extensive work.
The 50-metre pool has been emptied so workers can repair floor tiles, replace expansion joints and inspect the pool shell.
Pipe fittings are also being replaced to reduce the risk of water leaks during power outages, while guttering repairs and security upgrades are being completed.
At Beresfield, maintenance is underway on the playground, along with improvements to the kiosk before families return for summer.
Visitors to Stockton Pool will also notice new bench seating designed to improve comfort around the facility.
The maintenance program is carried out each winter while the pools are closed to minimise disruption during the swimming season.
The upgrades are designed to ensure the facilities are ready for the thousands of swimmers expected to visit across spring and summer.
