Newcastle MP pushes Transport Minister for faster e-bike safety

Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp has called on Transport Minister John Graham to fast-track reforms for e-bike regulations, warning that unsafe riding across the city is putting lives at risk.

Sadly, his plea follows a “worsening situation” in the region, where operators continue to flout the rules… on and off the road.

“Over the past month, my office has been contacted by constituents regarding e-bikes almost every day,” the state member explained.

“Some of them have reported being physically harmed from collisions.

“The volume and severity of these incidents is why I have urged the Mr Graham to expedite reforms.

“We need to act before someone’s life is lost in an e-bike accident in Newcastle.”

Mr Crakanthorp said the incidents were occurring across the city, not confined to one area.

He also stressed that while he supports cycling and active transport, public safety must come first.

“I do believe that e-bikes have a place in our system and can co-exist with other road-users and vehicles,” Mr Crakanthorp told the Newcastle Weekly.

“That is why we need to regulate their use, so shared spaces are safe for everyone.”

The MP’s concerns have been echoed by the community, with his recent Facebook post on the issue attracting hundreds of likes and prompting residents to share their experiences with unsafe e-bike riding.

“It is clear from the response I have received that the wider community agrees that this is an urgent issue… and action needs to be taken,” Mr Crakanthorp said.

In his letter to Mr Graham, he called for faster implementation of reforms following last year’s parliamentary inquiry into e-scooters, e-bikes and other mobility options.

The goal is to ensure e-bikes are used safely and responsibly, while allowing them to continue offering a sustainable and active alternative to car travel.
