UPDATE: Jets star Thurgate tests positive for COVID-19

The Newcastle Jets have confirmed one of its Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s football stars has tested positive to COVID-19.

It is understood the player, believed to be Angus Thurgate, is currently in isolation.

The news comes as the City deals with a number of outbreaks in the past few days, with The Argyle House, Finnegan’s Hotel and Newcastle’s NEX all deemed “hot spots” by the Hunter New England Local Health District.

“The infectious person, who is fully-vaccinated, received a positive PCR test result today (Tuesday 14 December) after undertaking a test this morning,” a Jets spokesperson said.

“He became symptomatic yesterday.

“All of the Jets’ players and football staff have now undergone subsequent PCR testing, in addition to the daily rapid antigen tests the club has been undergoing since October.

“At this stage, no other person has reported symptoms or returned a positive test.

“The Jets will continue to work with the A-Leagues and NSW Health and an update regarding the upcoming weekend’s game against Macarthur FC will be provided in the next 24 hours.

“We’ll also apprise our stakeholders and supporters with any information that may come to hand.”

The club’s A-League Women’s team has also been sent for testing.

The A-Leagues addressed the situation, too, stating the safety of its players, officials and spectators was its primary concern.

“We are working closely with Newcastle Jets FC and NSW Health to enact league protocol and to limit any potential spread of the virus,” a spokesperson said.

“Thankfully, no other member of the club’s playing, coaching, medical and operational staff have presented symptoms.

“But, all have undergone PCR testing and are self-isolating until they return a negative result.

“All A-Leagues players and coaching staff in NSW undergo daily screening processes, including rapid antigen tests, along with PCR tests every 72 hours.”

Newcastle broke through for its first victory of the 2021/22 season at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday night, thrashing the Wellington Phoenix 4-0.

The Jets are scheduled to tackle Macarthur FC next at Campbelltown Stadium in round five on Sunday 19 December.

The COVID-19 case at Newcastle follows Sydney FC defender Rhyan Grant being diagnosed with the virus last week.

Grant was unavailable for the 2-0 defeat at the Central Coast Mariners at the weekend and will have to isolate until next Wednesday.

The Sky Blues said he had experienced few symptoms but had lost his sense of taste.
