Newcastle Hunter Rugby League (NHRL) has set the stage for a bigger and more exciting season in 2026.

Following the official release of the draw this week, a total of 37 clubs – and 70 teams – will compete across multiple grades.

And, while officials welcome several new sides to the fold, this year also hails the return of the Hamilton Ducks.

“With just under a month to go until we kick off, it’s a very exciting time for our competition,” chairman Kevin King said.

“The growth we are seeing across all grades, particularly in the women’s space, is a real credit to the organisations and volunteers.

“To have 37 clubs and 70 teams involved this season highlights the strength of rugby league across the region.

“Plus, the continued expansion of programs shows the game is heading in a very positive direction.

“We’re expecting a highly-competitive year across every grade, with some outstanding match-ups in round one.

“Our focus remains on providing strong pathways, developing players, referees and volunteers, while delivering a competition the whole community can be proud of.”

It all begins from 10 April, with the grand final scheduled for 12 September.

The opening weekend will feature countless exciting showdowns.

In A grade, reigning champions Waratah Mayfield takes on Morpeth, who enters the top division after claiming the B grade minor premiership.

Cardiff will also be a club to watch in 2026, fielding three men’s teams.

Their B grade side begins with a clash with grand finalists Stockton.

In C grade, Clarence Town starts its campaign against Dungog.

Southern D grade witnesses the return of the Ducks, who’ll face Glendale.

Meanwhile, northern rivals Paterson and West Maitland will lock horns in another thrilling encounter.

Women’s participation continues to grow strongly across the region, too.

In A grade league tag, reigning premiers Waratah is setting its sights on Newcastle University in round one.

Morpeth adds to its program with the introduction of a new B grade side, which will open against Raymond Terrace, last year’s C grade titleholders.

In C grade league tag, Gloucester has entered a team for the first time and starts its crusade against the Nelson Bay Bandits.

With 14 rounds slated before the finals series, the competition will build towards a huge grand final day on 12 September, promising another outstanding year for community rugby league across the region.
