For more than two decades, a hearty band of breast cancer survivors have been a constant source of inspiration throughout the region.
Now, they’re offering other residents, who undergone similar scenarios, a chance to join their ranks.
Newcastle Hunter Dragons Abreast (NHDA) will stage a Come and Try Day from the Carrington boat ramp on Sunday 16 February at 8am to showcase the benefits of the sport.
“The club’s been operational since 2000,” secretary Kerryn Payne said.
“But, we’re a group of breast cancer survivors, thrivers and supporters, who strive to stay physically and mentally healthy by paddling dragon boats every week.
“That includes members whose first diagnosis was many years ago to those who’ve had one in the past 12 months, those who have survived and those thriving with metastatic breast cancer.
“As well as paddling weekly in Throsby Creek and Newcastle Harbour, our colleagues can also participate in regattas throughout Australia and internationally.
“And, while there are no men in the club at the moment, male breast cancer survivors are most welcome, too.”
Payne, who joined NHDA after her first breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in late 2022, admitted dragon boating had opened many doors for her.
“We’re also affiliated with Dragons Abreast Australia,” she said.
“So, as well as making life-long friendships at the local club, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with Dragons Abreast members from throughout the country.
“For me, along with weekly paddling in Newcastle, I’ve attended regattas in Darling Harbour and Penrith.
“Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with another breast cancer in 2023 but managed to participate at the Australian Masters Games in Adelaide, which I squeezed in between surgery and radiotherapy.
“Having the support of the other club members during that [treatment] was invaluable.
“I’ve since been to Sydney and Penrith again… and recently to Hobart.
“Later this year, I’m heading to Venice to paddle with new dragon boating friends from clubs around Australia that I met in Hobart.
“Then, in 2026, I’ll participate in an International Breast Cancer regatta in France with some other NHDA members.”
