Newcastle High School’s Jessica Sarmento is determined to transform the lives of her students.
And, it’s the main reason she was recently presented a 2024 Premier’s Teacher Scholarship.
Ms Sarmento was one of 12 recipients, out of 13, who work in the NSW public education system.
Scholarship beneficiaries each received between $10,000 and $15,000 for a five-week study tour.
The program is open to all NSW teachers from government and non-government schools and preschools, as well as educators at TAFE NSW institutes.
Ms Sarmento secured the NESA Quality Teaching Scholarship to study explicit teaching and progress monitoring of literacy and numeracy outcomes.
NSW Department of Education secretary Murat Dizdar praised the local mentor and her colleagues.
“I’m proud of our public school educators in NSW, like Jessica,” he said.
“They are deeply committed to ensuring our 800,000 students belong, succeed and thrive.
“These scholarships are a great opportunity for our outstanding teachers to continue to develop their skills and achieve the best learning outcomes for our pupils.
“They should be very pleased with their actions… and dedication.
“I’d like to thank the 2024 corporate sponsors for the scholarships including the Anika Foundation, Hicksons Lawyers, History Teachers Association of New South Wales, NSW Education Standards Authority, Reserve Bank of Australia, Teachers Mutual Bank, University of New South Wales (School of Education) and University of Sydney (Faculty of Science).”
The Premier’s Teacher Scholarship recipients were recognised at a reception at The Mint on 17 October.
