Newcastle Garden Awards primed to bloom again in 2022

After showcasing some of the region’s best “green thumbs” in 2021, the Newcastle Garden Awards are returning in 2022.

The competition provides a platform for the stunning gardens of all shapes and sizes across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie the chance to shine.

Whitebridge’s 8A Burwood Road claimed the large garden category, with partially formal gardens developed over 30 years surrounded by well-maintained lawns, while 21 Alexander Street in Hamilton South – made up of an entry arbour with white marque roses and a predominantly white and purple colour theme – prevailed in the small garden section.

A green sanctuary created with clever use of pots and containers, with a mix flowers and tropical plants, at 37 Tuckeroo Circuit, Adamstown, was deemed by the judges as the winner of the small spaces’ classification.

“Following the success of the inaugural awards, we expect to see even more submissions in 2022,” Newcastle Garden Awards founder Michael Edwards said.

“The quality of the entries, and in particular the winners, set an extremely high benchmark.

“But, with the interest generated from last year, I’m anticipating the standard will rise even further this time around.”

The categories have been refined slightly to reflect the wide array of properties and gardens across the region.

The sections now include:

  • Best Garden over 2000sqm
  • Best Garden under 2000sqm
  • Best Small Spaces Garden
  • Best Apartment Garden
  • People’s Choice

“All entries are submitted via photos, with the judging panel looking at all aspects of the garden plant selection, hard landscaping and careful maintenance,” Mr Edwards said.

“The People’s Choice Award is decided via a social media vote, with the 2021 winner being a unique cacti and succulent garden.

“In addition to stunning gardens, the 2021 awards brought out some incredible stories including COVID lockdown transformations, the sanctuaries, the ‘happy places’, children entering their parents, friends and neighbours encouraging entries.”

Entries for the Newcastle Garden Awards, which open on Monday 17 October, will be submitted electronically at, with participants uploading their own photos.

The competition closes on Friday 18 November, with the finalists announced five days later.

The winners will be revealed on Wednesday 30 November.
