Newcastle frocks up for a cause

Some lucky Novocastrians donned their best outfits at the weekend to raise vital funds for the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation.

Despite nearly falling victim to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Pink Race Day event raised $90,000 for the charity to continue its work supporting the community.

While the recent restrictions proved to be a challenge, event organisers put all the necessary arrangements in place to ensure the event at the Newcastle Jockey Club could go ahead.

Being a community funded charity, the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation relies heavily on support from the community – Pink Race Day is one its major fundraising opportunities.

General manager Ellie Wells said the last year has been challenging for the charity but thanks to community support they have been able to survive.

“We were disappointed that not everyone could attend the 2021 Pink Race Day, however being part of such an understanding community meant that we were still able to go ahead with an event that is so vital for Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation,” she said.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who supported us on the day.

“Whether that was through attending the event, donating a prize or a virtual donation your contribution makes a significant difference to the work we do.”

Since 2009, Pink Race Day has raised more than $370,000 to help the foundation continue to provide vital services to individuals and families as they navigate their way through breast cancer.

Event partner ClubsNSW Newcastle and Hunter Valley president Scott Williams said the relationship they have with the charity was a no-brainer.

“ClubsNSW provides support to communities every day,” he said.

“The unfortunate reality is that many Club members have a relative or friend that has been touched by breast cancer.

“The Pink Race Day is a great example of local clubs supporting a local charity that assists local people.”
