Vintage bridal gowns, screen-printed pieces, retro fabrics and offcuts will be on offer at the Newcastle Fabric Destash next month.
The annual event on Saturday 11 November is aimed at connecting quilters, crafters, sewers and dressmakers with material to help reignite their creative spirit.
To take place at St Andrews Church Hall in Mayfield, the three-hour sale will this year feature costumes from the Newcastle Theatre Company.
“I go to the destash almost every year, either as a punter or a stallholder,” says East Maitland seamstress Sandra Oost.
“It’s so much fun, it has a bustling atmosphere and it’s such a great way to meet like-minded people.
“My hot tip is to get there early for the best finds as there will be a line up. You never know what you’re going to find.”
The Destash vibrant vintage fabric sale is now in its ninth year.
The free community event regularly attracts fabric lovers of all ages seeking inspiration for their next project.
Stallholders offer everything from colourful and patterned fabric remnants to hand-screen printed pieces, vintage patterns and large fabric rolls or offcuts.
All fabric for sale is second-hand, some of which may have been stored for decades and needs a new home and purpose.
The event runs from 10am to 1pm.
“Come along for a chat and have fun rummaging through the fabric whilst also helping to reduce landfill,” says organiser Lee Illfield.
“Be sure to bring cash, this is a cash-only event.”
Each Australian disposes an average 23 kilograms of clothing to landfill each year and Australia has no systematic resources for the collection of unwearable clothing.
As a result, textile waste has become one of the largest contributors to Australia’s waste problem – Clean Up Australia.
