Newcastle City well-placed at State Cup

Newcastle City is well-placed to launch an assault on the prestigious 2020 NSW Touch State Cup at Port Macquarie this weekend.

The local association has hit the Regional Sports Stadium and Tuffins Lane fields in 10 divisions – men’s and women’s open, 20 men’s and women’s, 30 women’s, senior mixed, 40 men’s and women’s, 50 men’s and 60 men’s.

Following day one action on Friday 4 December, the Knights’ women’s open, senior mixed, 40 men’s and 60 men’s teams remain unbeaten in the biggest representative tournament of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

And, the other Newcastle City sides are causing a headache or two in their respective competitions.

In the women’s open, the Knights defeated the Central Coast Dolphins (3-2) and Deakin Thunder (2-0) early, before drawing 4-all with the Wests Tigers.

The senior mixed outfit bagged three consecutive victories, accounting for Gunnedah (7-1), Wollongong Devils (5-1) and Penrith Panthers (8-4).

Newcastle City’s 40 men’s knocked over the Maitland Rebels 4-3 in a thriller, shared the spoils with the Penrith Panthers 4-all and bounced back to upset the Balmain Tigers 4-0.

The 60 men’s put the Manly Sea Eagles to the sword 4-1 and prevailed against the Ballina Bull Sharks 2-0.

Matches continue tomorrow (Saturday 5 December) and Sunday 6 December.
