Several Newcastle charities are set to benefit from an internationally-famous initiative this festive season.
Light the World Giving Machines have arrived in the region for the first time.
And, they’ll highlight the “spirit of giving” in the Charlestown Square Food Court, opposite the cinema, from Monday 8 December to Friday 28 December.
The bright red vending devices invite people to “push the button and dispense hope”, swapping snacks for charitable benevolence.
Each tap buys real items such as food, clothing, medical supplies and emergency care, with 100% of every donation going directly to local organisations.
In Newcastle, that inaugural honour belongs to Sleapy’s Foundation, Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF), Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern NSW and Jenny’s Place.
Joining them are national outlets UNICEF Australia and Foodbank.
“It’s exciting that Newcastle will get to experience this new heartfelt way to help those in need,” Peter Sleap said.
“The Giving Machines bring people together in such a joyful way.
“This city has a big heart… and I know our community will rally to make a difference.
“It’s what Christmas is all about – kindness in action.”
MHF founder Mark Hughes agreed.
“To see Newcastle included in a world-wide campaign like this is amazing,” he said.
“It’s inspiring to witness local and global charities standing side-by-side, united by the same goal – helping people in need.
“Every tap at the Giving Machines will directly impact lives right here in our Hunter community.”
Since launching in Sydney in 2023 and following a successful season of charitable giving across New South Wales in 2024, the project has ignited a nationwide movement.
Expanding this year to even more cities, with new locations such as Newcastle, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Hobart, it will also return to Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra.
Globally, the Giving Machines have raised more than $74 million worldwide and now appear in over 130 locations across the world, with high-profile supporters such as Travis Kelce and Drew Barrymore backing the campaign.
So, Newcastle’s unveiling marks the beginning of what’s sure to become a cherished local Christmas tradition – one built on kindness, connection and community spirit.
