If ever there was a time for a good news story, it’s certainly now.
And, a group of Newcastle business owners and their children did their best to provide that at the weekend.
They came together on Sunday 14 December in a bid to help families doing it tough this Christmas.

The brainchild of Richard Young and Simon Powell, Under One Tree is a community-led movement created to assist those who’ve supported the local enterprises.
To kick off the initiative, the pair’s venture, Clean4You, donated $5,000 to purchase gifts for Samaritans Giving Trees.
Even better, their own youngsters selected the presents at Broadmeadow’s Frontline Hobbies.
“My wife (Christine) and I heard an interview on radio, which mentioned some families were unable to provide for their kids at Christmas due to a variety of reasons,” Mr Young said.
“Many homegrown Hunter businesses like ours have benefitted from our community.
“So, we want to pay it forward in a big, tangible way.”
Their goal is to reach $50,000 in support of Samaritans.
In just one afternoon, they’d received commitments up to $15,000.
“This isn’t just about writing a cheque,” Mr Young said.
“We’re asking donors to bring their children to walk the aisles at Frontline Hobbies and choose gifts for kids less fortunate than themselves.
“It reminds them how blessed they are.
“And, it’s teaching generosity, empathy and community in a way that’ll stay with them for life.
“It is also great to see how thoughtful they are picking presents for people their own age.”

Now, they’re challenging other businesses to contribute what they can.
“So, far the response has been amazing,” Mr Young said.
“We’re already talking about making it an annual event.
“Everyone was keen to be involved.
“I’d like to thank Raman and his wonderful family at Newcastle Carpet & Tile Cleaning; Alex from NextView Property Wickham; Saurabh and his family from Sapphire Indian Restaurant at Merewether; our neighbours Steve and Mary from Dimo Air; Carl and his family from DK Mechanical at Warners Bay; Ian and Jen from McCallum Partners; Jason, Emma and the team at Hunter Homes; Tim and Ree from Urban Certifying; and Ree Hodges Art.
“Let’s not forget Frontline Hobbies, who’s pledged its support by committing to a 50% discount on every purchase made as part of the Under One Tree campaign, meaning every donated dollar goes twice as far.”
Locals can still make donations to Samaritans Giving Trees by heading to the website.
