Newcastle Business Club to host defence, industry leaders at luncheon

The Newcastle Business Club is set to bring together leading voices from defence, industry and education for its luncheon next month.

And, the event – entitled How do we leverage investment in the Hunter defence ecosystem? – will feature a high-calibre panel of speakers with deep expertise across government, academia and advanced manufacturing.

Former Minister for Defence Joel Fitzgibbon, University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, Nupress Group CEO Craig McWilliam and Aerospace, BAE Systems Australia director Andrew Chapman are slated to front the audience at Fort Scratchley on Tuesday 5 May between noon and 1.30pm.

They’ll explore how the region can capitalise on growing investment in Australia’s defence sector.

Facilitator Tim Owen will oversee the discussion, too, guiding a conversation focused on the opportunities and challenges associated with outlays in the sector, and what it means for local businesses, supply chains and the broader Hunter economy.

Newcastle Business Club president Sam Rykers said the function came a critical time for the region.

“The Hunter is uniquely positioned to play a significant role in Australia’s defence future,” she explained.

“This luncheon brings together leaders who can provide real insight into how local businesses can engage with and benefit from this investment.

“We are proud to present such a strong panel of speakers to explore the opportunities ahead for our region and support meaningful connections across business, industry and government.”

With major defence programs such as the F-35 and advanced manufacturing initiatives driving activity across the country, the event will highlight how collaboration between all parties can unlock long-term economic growth for the region.

“We continue to connect local professionals through our monthly luncheons, providing a platform for meaningful conversation, networking and knowledge-sharing,” Ms Rykers said.

“This event is proudly supported by Newcastle Airport and Astra Aerolab, whose commitment to innovation and growth in the defence and aerospace sectors aligns strongly with the themes of this discussion.”

Tickets for the May luncheon are now on sale and will close on Friday 1 May, unless sold out prior.
