With its eagerly-anticipated opening just months away, members of the Hunter Joint Organisation (HJO) recently enjoyed a sneak peek inside Newcastle Airport’s International Terminal.
The attendees – which included Singleton mayor Sue Moore (HJO chair); Port Stephens mayor Leah Anderson, GM Tim Crosdale; Lake Macquarie City mayor Adam Shultz, CEO Morven Cameron; Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold, GM Jeff Smith; Muswellbrook Shire mayor Jeffrey Drayton, GM Derek Finnigan; Cessnock City mayor Daniel Watton; Dungog Shire mayor Digby Rayward; and City of Newcastle CEO Jeremy Bath; as well as HJO, Lake Macquarie City and Muswellbrook Shire council staff – participated in an exclusive tour of the multi-million-dollar facility, expected to be operational from 1 August.
Once complete, the upgraded complex will position the Williamtown precinct as NSW’s second global gateway, unlocking new routes, investment and economic opportunity for the region.
The visit also included updates on the airport’s air cargo advocacy efforts, the continued growth of Astra Aerolab, and partnership efforts to attract new international and domestic itineraries.
Newcastle Airport EGM people and communications Burcak Sezer admitted collaboration was key to realising the full potential of the international terminal for the Hunter.
“The success of this project relies on strong regional affiliations,” he said.
“This facility will be a major driver of economic growth; not just for Newcastle, but for every part of the Hunter.
“Ultimately, it’s all about the airport our region deserves.”
The HJO reinforced its support for the international terminal, too.
“We have such a beautiful region,” said Cr Anderson, who is deputy chair of the organisation.
“So, we look forward to sharing this with others by making the Hunter more connected and easier to explore for both visitors and our local community.
“This international gateway into our backyard will ultimately generate huge economic activity and is expected to drive increased investment and support businesses across our region.”
Cr Moore echoed those sentiments.
“As the chair of the HJO, representing the 10 mayors of the region, we understand the importance of the Newcastle Airport to our ongoing economic transformation,” she said.
“This major infrastructure project will enable our regions’ visitor economy to grow as investment and tourism opportunities open.
“It’ll provide great opportunities for external investment as well, driving further development and growth within our region.
“We want to share our breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage and world-renowned vineyards with others and this offers us the chance to do so.”
