New police recruits to hit the beat in Hunter

More than half a dozen rookies are expected to hit the beat on Hunter streets from next week.

Following Friday’s Attestation ceremony in Goulburn, eight probationary constables will be deployed to a number of stations throughout the Northern Region.

The biggest winner is Newcastle City Police District (PD), who’ll pick up four recruits, while Lake Macquarie PD and Port Stephens-Hunter PD gain two each.

The newcomers, from Class 354, recently completed their eight months of training and studies and will begin their year of on-the-job development on Monday 22 August.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole said a profession in policing was ideal for anyone looking to make a difference in their community.

“For these probationary constables, Monday will mark day one of a challenging and rewarding career keeping our communities safe,” he explained.

“They will join almost 18,000 other men and women in blue working as part of a world-class modern police force to drive down crime rates.

“NSW Police is actively recruiting as part of its ‘You should be a cop’ campaign.

“So, I encourage anyone looking for new opportunities to give it a go.”

In 2019 the NSW Government announced the delivery of 1,500 additional police positions over four years.

All of these roles will be filled by the end of the financial year.

Police Commissioner Karen Webb greeted the rookies to the fold.

“The NSW Police Force is proud to welcome the 154 new probationary constables as we continue to grow as an organisation,” she said.

“Our thousands of police officers perform some of the most important work in our community every day and they do a tremendous job.

“The work they do to help victims of crime, investigate violent crimes and bring offenders before the courts is nothing short of remarkable.”
