A number of new faces from throughout the region will add a fresh perspective to the Hunter Joint Organisation (HJO).
Recently-elected mayors Daniel Watton (Cessnock City), Digby Rayward (Dungog), Adam Shultz (Lake Macquarie City), Jeff Drayton (Muswellbrook Shire), Dr Ross Kerridge (City of Newcastle) and Leah Anderson (Port Stephens) met long-standing counterparts Philip Penfold (Maitland), Claire Ponton (MidCoast), Sue Moore (Singleton) and Maurice Collison (Upper Hunter Shire) at Maitland last month.
They, along with the general managers from each council, play a vital role in ensuring the area remains a vibrant and prosperous place to live, work and visit.
Over the next four years, the HJO members will identify – and advocate for – key regional strategic priorities and build collaborations with other levels of government, industry and community.
Even though Cr Drayton attended remotely, the occasion gave them all a chance to explore the role of the Hunter Joint Organisation, while also focusing on a Strategic Plan for the region.
They discussed a collective approach to coping with the fiscal and social challenges of moving towards a “post carbon” or net zero economy, too.
Meanwhile, Cr Moore was re-elected as chair while newcomer Cr Anderson will serve as her 2IC.
“I’m proud to be elected deputy chair, representing the Hunter and advocating the shared priorities of our member councils and their communities,” she said.
“It’s the first time the HJO has had two women in the top roles.
“So, I look forward to working with Sue Moore and all of the Hunter mayors for great outcomes for our region.
“By interacting together, we can meet the challenges of growth while capitalising on the opportunities ahead.”
The HJO will next meet in Newcastle in December.
The board then convenes every two months, in various LGAs, until 2028.
