New jewel in Wickham crown

Flotilla is the word on everyone’s lips.

The newest addition to Wickham’s foodie scene offers fancy fare in a refined casual setting.

With an inviting atmosphere, the quirky, wedge-shaped restaurant and bar on Albert Street is unique and intimate, yet unpretentious.

The creative geniuses behind it are ex-Silverchair bassist and Newcastle royalty, Chris Joannou, and his close friend Zach Scholtz, whom are also to thank for The Criterion Hotel in Carrington and The Edwards in Newcastle West.

Many were devastated when a fire tore through The Edwards last June, but will be pleased to know Joannou said builders were “working to put the old girl back together again” for its reopening very soon.

“It knocked the wind out of our sails a bit, but we’re back on track,” Joannou told Newcastle Weekly.

Flotilla was in the works even before The Edwards, inspired by Joannou’s travels, particularly around Abbott Kinney Boulevard and Venice Beach in Los Angeles.

He loved the vibe and colour palette, and the food was produce-driven and fresh.

That’s exactly what he’s aimed to recreate at Flotilla – named so for its connection to Wickham’s harbourside heritage.
The menu is a reflection of chefs Paul and Jess’ passion for food.

For them, the relationship between food producer and the chef is important; to have the food at its peak, they work closely with suppliers to secure the finest ingredients.

The dishes are not overworked; the chefs work in the most creative and minimalistic way to let each ingredient shine. It’s honest yet refined.

When asked how he could juggle running three establishments in Newcastle, Joannou replied with: “Life is a little busier, but I thoroughly enjoy the hospitality industry and providing a memorable experience.”

Flotilla officially opened to the public before the Easter long weekend after two highly successful and coveted media launches.
