It’s one of the busiest Marine Rescue NSW units in the state.
So, taking receipt of a newly-equipped Emergency Response vehicle, designed to rapidly deploy lifesaving jet skis in high-risk situations, was certainly welcomed by the Lake Macquarie crew.
The local hierarchy, and volunteers, officially unveiled the latest addition to its operations – thanks to mining giant Glencore – at its Pelican base on Wednesday 9 July.
Its arrival comes at a crucial time, following recent flood rescues where Marine Rescue NSW teams provided essential assistance across the Hunter and Mid-North Coast regions.
However, it offers so much more.
Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie (MRLM) personnel respond to boating mishaps, life-threatening water emergencies and flood rescues around the clock to protect the community.
But, utilising specific watercraft has been hindered by logistical challenges.
That is until now.
“This vehicle, fully-equipped to tow a double jet ski trailer, will transform our ability to act swiftly and efficiently when seconds count,” MRLM Unit Commander Jim Wright said.
“Gratefully, the essential upgrade was made possible through the support of a new three-year partnership with Glencore.
“The company’s funding ensures volunteers can continue responding swiftly to emergencies across the region.
“Having this purpose-built Emergency Response vehicle means we can mobilise quickly when an emergency call comes in, without delays caused by vehicle limitations.
“This upgrade significantly enhances our ability to respond to emergency events, saving lives across the Hunter.
“As well, it backs our vital fundraising teams in the community.”
Glencore’s social performance manager Craig Strudwick was delighted to support MRLM… and its vital lifesaving work.
“Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie is run entirely by almost 200 dedicated volunteers who give their time 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to protect the community,” he said.
“When they needed help, we saw an opportunity to support those who continually help others.”
