Australia will welcome a new $5 note featuring a design that honours the culture and history of the First Australians.
The Reserve Bank made the announcement on Thursday 2 February.Â
The new design will replace the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the reverse side continuing to feature the Australian Parliament.
This decision by the Reserve Bank Board follows consultation with the Australian Government, which supports this change.
Design consultations with First Australians will begin soon, while the final product could take several years to begin circulating.
The country’s first banknote featured Aboriginal rock paintings and carvings when the first $1 note was issued in 1966.
Australia’s first polymer banknote, a $10 issued as a one-off in 1988, also included examples of ancient and contemporary Aboriginal art.
The current $50 banknote features author, activist, inventor, musician and preacher, David Uniapon, a Ngarrindjeri man from South Australia.
