Netball season 2024 begins across the Hunter region

SHARE

Whistle sounds will mark the start of the winter sport season this weekend, with players from several codes tying laces and filling drink bottles for what will become ‘weekend life’ for the next few months.

And, why not, this is what keeps us active during the colder months, providing the motivation to keep moving despite the weather.

For spectators, Saturday 6th April signals the perfect time to retrieve the puffer jacket from storage and dig out waterproof boots and warm gloves from their hibernation spaces.

It won’t be long before car mats and sports shoes will be smothered in cut grass and sloshy mud, another side effect to winter sport season.

Parents-slash-uber drivers, the start of April also means you’ll soon be kept busy ferrying your future sports stars to their place of play on a regular basis.

To all the loyal volunteers that work behind the scenes making this production happen every week here’s a huge thanks in advance.

Newcastle Netball Association

Newcastle Netball will launch its 5th Greater Bank Series on Saturday 6th April, welcoming Norths Netball Club to the competition after the University of Newcastle left.

Newcastle Netball Association (NNA) President Cheryl Hernando said the 2024 competition looked exciting.

“Norths have made some exciting signings like Premier League goal shooter Imogen McCulloch and NSW u17s representative Ellie Stacey, so I can’t wait to see what they put out on court,” Hernando said.

“I don’t think anything is a given in this competition, which is what makes it so thrilling.”

With each club fielding a team in the Championship, Opens and Under 23s divisions, the competition also provides a top-level pathway experience for junior talent, which McCulloch said has been wonderful for player development.

Charlestown Netball Association also starts its season on Saturday, with a calendar already filled with dedicated dates including its much-loved Koori Cup.

Lakeside Netball Association kicked off its season earlier in March, with the Belmont-based courts hosting teams in their third round this weekend.

The Hunter is also home to Port Stephens Netball Association, Maitland Netball Association, Callaghan Netball Association and Westlakes Netball Association.
