Muswellbrook prepares for economic shift as new industries emerge

SHARE

Muswellbrook Shire Council (MSC) is preparing for an economic transition as it looks to position the Upper Hunter as a hub for emerging industries.

The move comes ahead of the launch of the organisation’s Powering the Future Economy campaign, aimed at attracting new investment and opportunities to the region.

It’s understood the crusade will be launched at NSW Parliament House on Wednesday 25 March.

Council has also pointed to recent survey data highlighting growing interest in regional areas.

Results from an NGM Group YouGov study found more than a quarter of respondents now view rural living as more appealing than 12 months ago.

It also found 71% of Australians believe regional areas are no longer defined by traditional industries, with many expecting innovation and emerging sectors to play a greater role in the future.

Council’s director of community and economy Shaelee Richards said the Upper Hunter was working to diversify its economy ahead of planned mine closures.

“Muswellbrook is uniquely located, with access to Newcastle Airport, Australia’s largest east coast seaport in Newcastle, and within three hours of Sydney, our largest city,” she explained.

“Our geographic locale and strong infrastructure connections place us in an excellent position to take advantage of emerging industries and future investment opportunities.”

Several major projects are planned across the Muswellbrook Shire over the next five years, too, including the Muswellbrook Bypass, redevelopment of Olympic Park and the Regional Entertainment Centre.

Council feels these ventures will support economic growth while improving local infrastructure and liveability.

Meanwhile, small businesses are being invited to attend the unveiling of Powering the Future Economy at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre.

The event, scheduled for Tuesday 31 March, will provide an opportunity to hear from council representatives, industry partners and mayor Jeff Drayton about the initiative.

“It’s important for businesses to be involved as the region prepares for change,” Cr Drayton said.
