Muswellbrook Shire mayor Jeff Drayton has slammed the Commonwealth after council missed out on $5 million funding for its AGL Hunter Energy Hub.
The organisation originally submitted an application in September 2024, through the federal government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program, to support the accelerated development of the venture.
But, following last week’s budget, it appears they’ve been left empty-handed.
Cr Drayton said the decision was a significant setback for the region as it prepared for major changes in its economy as coal mining declines.
“Muswellbrook is doing all the heavy lifting,” he explained.
“There’s a lot of talk from government about the opportunities our region has for the future.
“Talk alone will not deliver outcomes; we need real action and meaningful investment.
“With the largest coal mines scheduled to close in less than three-and-a-half years’ time, we must act now.
“We’ve just waited for 24 months for the federal government to assess this application… and it’s not good enough.
“We need the AGL site to progress, so we can accommodate new industries and create jobs before the mines close.”
Cr Drayton admitted the latest setback risked undermining confidence among major investors and industry stakeholders.
“The allocation of the $5 million would have provided a clear signal to everyone… and new and existing business that Muswellbrook is being backed by the government,” he said.
“It would have demonstrated how all levels of government, industry and community are working together to create jobs and future opportunities in our region during this critical period.”
Despite the delay, Muswellbrook Shire remains committed to advocating for investment in the AGL Hunter Energy Hub.
Council will continue working with government, industry and community stakeholders to secure the support needed to deliver long-term jobs, investment and opportunities for the future in the LGA.
