Are you moving to a new house or apartment? These tips will help you navigate through the tedious process with relative ease.
Label everything
Label each box or bag in accordance with the items you pack in them. This will help you keep track of where things go, and it will also make it easier when it comes to unpacking.
Be ruthless
If it is not a necessity or doesn’t have any sentimental value, send it to the tip. This will save space in your boxes and will lead to less clutter in your new home. Donate and recycle items where you can.
Wrap breakables
Wrap anything that is fragile. You could buy bubble wrap or other packing materials but another more sustainable way to go about it is to use clothes, tablecloths, socks or tea towels. To be extra safe you could pad out the boxes with other soft items, like your pillows or any stuffed toys.
Work on one room at a time
Pack one room at a time and keep all the packed items for that room together.
Measure doorways
Will your bed frame fit through the door? What about your cupboard? Find out by measuring your accessways and know if you need to take anything apart.
Take a picture
If you need to pull anything apart, take a picture of it to help you remember where things go and how it looked. This is particularly helpful with electronics.
Don’t overload boxes
Distribute weight throughout the boxes evenly. Pack heavy items on the bottom and don’t overfill them because it may cause the box to break.
Reinforce your boxes
Tape the top, bottom and side of every box to ensure it stays together.
Be sensible
If something is too heavy to lift or is hard to handle get help. If you don’t, you risk hurting yourself and the item in the process.
