Movember organisers hope Top Gun star inspires Novocastrians to join annual fundraiser

Has Hollywood heartthrob Miles Teller inspired a new generation of hirsute men following his star turn in Top Gun: Maverick?

The organisers behind Movember certainly hope so.

Now, they’re asking males throughout Newcastle and the Hunter region to embrace one of the hottest facial trends of 2022.

With the hairiest month of the year just days away, there has never been a better time for the moustache to make its grand return.

In fact, it will be the most important mo you’ll ever grow.

Leading charity Movember is calling on Mo Bros across the region to unite in a quest to stop others dying too young.

To use their face as walking, talking billboards to help raise funds and awareness for men’s health.

“We believe in the connective power of community,” Movember APAC country director Rachel Carr said.

“It’s how one hairy idea powered an international men’s health movement with more than six million supporters across 21 countries.

“It has also started billions of conversations and funded over 1,250 men’s health programs around the world, programs that tackle some of the most complex issues facing men today.”

Ms Carr said people couldn’t afford to stay silent any longer.

“It’s time to face up for men’s health,” she added.

And, these facts back her plea:

  • Aussie men die on average four years earlier than women- and for largely preventable reasons
  • Aussie men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women, with more than six men losing their lives to suicide every single day
  • Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in Australian men, with one in five men receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis in their lifetime
  • Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged between 15 and 34
  • Over the past 30 years, the number of men diagnosed with testicular cancer has grown by almost 60% (with 17 men diagnosed each week)

“With Movember’s help, we’ve managed to deliver biomedical research, cancer survivorship initiatives, innovative community mental health programs and digital health products that work for men,” Ms Carr said.

“But, there is still so much work to be done.

“Every donation, every fundraising effort – no matter how big or small – is both life-changing and lifesaving.”

How to get involved

  • GROW A MO: Patchy, lopsided, itchy or epic – whatever mo you grow will save a bro this Movember because even the worst moustaches start the best conversations. Use your face to raise funds and awareness for men’s health
  • MOVE: Run or walk 60km over the month to help shine a light on the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour, every hour across the world
  • HOST AN EVENT: Rally a crew, online or in-person, to raise the roof together for a feed, a dance, and a good cause. Have some fun and create an epic mo-ment
  • MO YOUR OWN WAY: Create your own kind of fundraising adventure but make it epic in scope and scale
