A young motorist has suffered serious spinal injuries following a single vehicle accident in Port Stephens this morning.

About 4.30am on Tuesday 19 April, a Nissan Patrol was travelling along Lemon Tree Passage Road, Salt Ash, when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed outside a home.

The 21-year-old male driver – and sole occupant – was trapped before being freed by a passer-by.

The member of the public started first aid prior to the arrival of emergency services.

NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived on scene and carried out initial treatment before the arrival of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service’s Critical Care Medical Team.

The man was further stabilised prior to being airlifted direct to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney in a serious condition.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District established a crime scene and have began inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
