The future looks bright for the Lake Macquarie suburb of Morisset over the next two decades, according to council.
It’s understood councillors will consider a proposal at next week’s meeting to place a draft Morisset Place Strategy on public exhibition.
The blueprint is expected to set the 2264 postcode’s direction for a 20-year period.
It also outlines five strategic actions for Morisset, including:
- Encouraging diversity and lifestyle choice
- Protecting biodiversity and managing growth sensitively
- Strengthening Morisset’s centre as the suburb’s civic and economic heart
- Improving movement, access and transport choices
- Creating a robust and flexible framework to guide land use and transport planning
Lake Macquarie City mayor Adam Shultz admitted Morisset was earmarked for some of the region’s most significant growth and development.
“This draft Place Strategy lays the groundwork to achieve that sustainably, capitalise on the opportunities it creates and identifies the infrastructure and facilities needed to support the community as development occurs,” he said.
Key to the document, too, is a structure plan.
That will guide future land use and infrastructure planning.
And, its list includes advocating to the NSW Government for a future health facility and to improve traffic management and public transport in Morisset.
Council’s manager integrated planning Matthew Hill said extensive community consultation helped shape the draft strategy, with almost 300 survey responses and 65 written submissions.
“More than half of respondents expressed concerns about traffic, particularly through the town centre, and more than 40% noted a lack of active transport options and the need to improve walking and cycling infrastructure,” he stated.
“The draft Place Strategy supports reducing impacts in the CBD, strengthening walking and cycling for local trips and improving civic transport connections.”
Further feedback will be sought if Lake Macquarie councillors resolve to place the draft strategy on public exhibition.
