Hunter school students hesitant about their Year 11 and 12 career pathways can take heart from the TAFE NSW experience of Maitland’s Morgan Campbell.

She’s heading for a dream career in veterinary nursing without sitting the HSC.

Morgan always wanted to work with animals but was less certain about the value of the traditional school to university pathway.

“I wasn’t enjoying school,” she admitted.

Maitland’s Morgan Campbell.

“It wasn’t the right learning environment for me and university didn’t interest me, so I started exploring other options.

“I then heard about the Tertiary Preparation Certificate; a friend had done the course at TAFE NSW, and highly recommended it.”

Morgan enrolled in the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation at TAFE NSW Maitland.

And, she discovered the difference on day one.

“My very first class was maths and when the teacher heard that I had been getting marks in the 50s at school, she sat down with me and took time to identify the areas I was struggling with,” she said.

“I felt heard and understood, and the one-on-one approach that my teacher used to explain the various concepts in that class led to me scoring marks in the 80s.”

After Morgan completed her Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) she was then accepted into the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing course at TAFE NSW Kurri Kurri.

She also works both at a veterinary clinic and as a teacher’s aide using the knowledge and skills learnt during her TPC.

“I’ve been able to apply my abilities in understanding mathematical formulas to writing for reports and essays and referencing essays correctly,” Morgan said.

“The whole learning experience at TAFE NSW has been perfect for me.”

Head teacher for career pathways at TAFE NSW Maitland Donna Clark said it was important for youngsters to realise the many options available to them.

“If students are passionate about certain careers, but the HSC is not an option for whatever reason, there are multiple pathways for those students to get to where they want,” she stated.

“Our Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation is seen as an alternative pathway to Year 12 because it prepares students for Diploma level and university study.

“It helps students develop the technical, social and academic skills required at the next level of study.”
