More bulk-billing GP clinics slated for Hunter region

In a major healthcare boost for the region, six new bulk-billing general practices (GPs) are slated for the Hunter and Central Coast.

The $25.3 million investment, over three years, will ensure residents in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and beyond have access to better medical services.

It’s understood those areas were chosen for the clinics because of their persistently-low usage rates.

In Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, the bulk-billing percentage sits at 66.6, compared to the national average of 81.4%.

It’s also 30% lower than western and south-western Sydney.

“There is a cultural issue in GPs in this region,” federal Health Minister Mark Butler said.

“And, we’re determined to change that.

“We want all Australians to get the health care they need when they need it.

“Whether that’s here in the Hunter or on the Central Coast.

“Having six new bulk-billing GP clinics will help make health care cheaper and more accessible for many in the community.

“They’ll provide about 155,000 services each year.”

The facilities are expected to open by mid-2027.

Their locations and operators will be selected through a competitive grant process by the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network, targeting areas in the region with the greatest need for access to clinics.

“Families across western Lake Macquarie deserve affordable health care close to home,” Hunter MP Dan Repacholi said.

“These bulk-billing GP clinics will make a real difference for local communities doing it tough.

“For too many people in places like Toronto, Morisset and Edgeworth, the cost of seeing a doctor has become a barrier to getting care when they need it.”

Shortland MP Pat Conroy agreed.

“Residents throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Central Coast are paying too much just to visit a GP,” he said.

“Many can’t find one that bulk-bills either.

“We know the Hunter has some of the lowest bulk billing rates in the country and the problem is a lack of competition.

“We’re stepping in to make it easier to see a GP for free.”

Paterson MP Meryl Swanson said her electorate was one of the fastest-growing in NSW.

“That growth must be matched with investment,” she explained.

“We’re already seeing just how important affordable health care is in Paterson.

“More than 12 existing GP practices are making the switch to bulk-billing, while more than 4,800 locals have visited the Maitland Medicare Urgent Care Clinic in the past six months.”
