Long-time resident and respected businessman John Moores will step into the deputy mayor’s shoes following Wednesday night’s extraordinary Cessnock City Council meeting.

His appointment comes after the organisation’s first official assembly since the 2021 NSW Local Government elections in 2021.

Cr Moores admitted was looking forward to working constructively with mayor Jay Suvaal and the elected council for the benefit of all who live in the Cessnock LGA.

“With 48 years in Cessnock, I have seen things change,” he said.

“I’ve had three businesses in the town and I come from a mining background.

“I feel that I have the knowledge to assist Jay in moving forward in the City.

“Let’s try to get back on track and let’s try to build the town back to how it was.”

Cr Moores will focus on jobs, especially those for young people.

“There are apprenticeships out there,” he said.

“And, I’d like to see the youth go for them.

“There is not a lot of money at the beginning, but once you have got that trade behind you, you are set for life.”

Cr Suvaal congratulated Cr Moores on his election to the role as deputy mayor.

“I’m keen to develop a positive working relationship,” he said.

“John has extensive business knowledge and that will be an asset in the position of deputy mayor.

“I know he is passionate about our community and will bring this enthusiasm to assisting me with my mayoral duties.”

Cessnock City Council will host its first ordinary meeting on Wednesday 16 February at 6.30pm.

It will be broadcast “live” to the council Facebook page.

The meeting is also open to the public.

Anyone wishing to attend in person is required to wear a mask and check in with a QR code while social distancing is advised.
